The Florida State Seminoles will open the 2026 college football season at home against the New Mexico State Aggies at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Saturday.
Florida State enters Mike Norvell’s seventh season looking to start fast before a much more difficult stretch of its schedule arrives. The Seminoles will host SMU on Labor Day before traveling to Alabama on Sept. 19.
Saturday’s opener against New Mexico State kicks off at 7 p.m. ET and will air nationally on The CW.
New Mexico State, meanwhile, is coming off a 4-8 season and will immediately face a major challenge against an FSU team with much bigger expectations in the ACC.

The Seminoles enter the matchup as heavy favorites. Florida State is a 30.5-point favorite over New Mexico State, with the over/under set at 53.5 points, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
New Mexico State Turns to Trey Hedden at Quarterback
New Mexico State will hand its offense to a new quarterback in Trey Hedden.
The junior transfer from Furman was named the Aggies’ starter after throwing for 2,967 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season.
Hedden also brings some experience against Power Four competition, including a start against Clemson. That could prove useful in one of the more difficult environments New Mexico State will see all season.
The Aggies struggled offensively in 2025, ranking near the bottom of Conference USA in both scoring and total offense.
Head coach Tony Sanchez will be hoping Hedden can bring more consistency to that side of the ball as New Mexico State begins its third season under Sanchez.
Florida State presents a difficult first test.
The Seminoles return wide receiver Duce Robinson after he led the ACC during the 2025 regular season with 1,081 receiving yards. Robinson averaged 21.15 yards per reception and enters the season as one of Florida State’s most dangerous offensive weapons.
Florida State also returns defensive lineman Mandrell Desir, who recorded 7.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks as a true freshman last season.
Florida State Opens 80th Football Season at Home
There will also be plenty of new faces for the Seminoles.
Florida State’s 109-player roster includes 62 newcomers, including 23 four-year transfers, as Norvell continues reshaping the program entering 2026.
Saturday will mark only the second meeting between Florida State and New Mexico State.
The first came in 1964, when the Seminoles defeated the Aggies 36-0 at Doak Campbell Stadium. Saturday’s matchup will also officially open Florida State’s 80th football season.
For New Mexico State, pulling off an upset would immediately become one of the biggest results of Week 0.
For Florida State, the goal is much simpler: take care of business at home and build momentum before the schedule becomes considerably more demanding.
