BATON ROUGE — Lane Kiffin has not been shy about attacking this transfer portal window for one position group in particular.
LSU football announced the signing of West Florida wide receiver transfer Tyree Holloway Saturday morning. Holloway is the seventh receiver Kiffin and his offensive staff have pulled from the portal for their first portal class at LSU.
Holloway visited Baton Rouge a couple of days ago and the Tigers left enough of an impression on him that he has pledged his commitment.
Last season at West Florida, the 6-foot, 180-pound sophomore had 34 catches for 661 yards and eight touchdowns.
Why Tyree Holloway picked LSU football out of transfer portal
LSU was one of the first high-level college football programs to extend an offer to Holloway sinec his name has been in the portal. Kiffin and company offered him during his visit to LSU on Jan. 8.
The Tigers, the SEC and Tiger Stadium are a far cry from UWF and Division II football, so for Holloway this is a step of confidence in his ability to be able to play at the Power Four level of college football.
How Tyree Holloway will fit LSU football’s roster
This is what Kiffin does. He evaluates and identifies players in the lower levels of the sport that he thinks can produce and perform at the highest level of college football. He just did this with Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who was the quarterback at Ferris State.
Breaking through the now very saturated wide receiver room, thanks to the bevy of transfers LSU has brought in, won’t be easy for Holloway but Kiffin would not have signed him if there isn’t ability to play at this level there. Expect Holloway to compete.
LSU football transfer targets
- Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt
- Alabama offensive lineman Micah DeBose
- Penn State edge rusher Chaz Coleman
- North Carolina State wide receiver Terrell Anderson
- California-Davis running back Carter Vargas
- McNeese State cornerback Javon Davis
When does transfer portal close?
The NCAA transfer portal window closes Jan. 16. Players cannot enter their name in the portal following that date. But those whose name is already in the transfer portal can still decide and sign with a new school after Jan. 16.
