For the first time in two decades, two Petrinos will be on the Louisville football staff.
Paul Petrino will reportedly return to the Derby City to work with the Cardinals' tight ends, taking on a senior role as part of the offensive staff. The news was first reported by 247Sports' Jody Demling. The Cardinals lost tight ends coach Ryan Wallace to Oregon State. Paul Petrino's son, Mason, has been part of the UofL staff as a graduate assistant and quality control coach since 2024.
Paul Petrino is the younger brother of former UofL head coach Bobby Petrino, who was recently hired as North Carolina's offensive coordinator. Paul Petrino had previously been at South Alabama where he was the wide receivers coach in 2024 and the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach last season. This is his third stint with the Cardinals after serving as the program's wide receivers coach (1998-99) under John L. Smith before returning four years later as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach under his brother, Bobby, between 2003 and 2006.
Paul Petrino left Louisville to become the Atlanta Falcons' wide receivers coach. He's spent most of his career as an offensive coordinator while working with quarterbacks and wide receivers but had his first and only head coaching job at Idaho (2013-21). While there, he coached Mason, who played wide receiver and was the Vandals' starting quarterback for the 2018-19 seasons.
