The Ole Miss football team has a big game on Saturday night against LSU. Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding is going up against his former boss, LSU’s Lane Kiffin. Golding is revealing some information about how his team will hope to stop LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt.
“I think the discipline up front, to understand what are we trying to accomplish on base downs….let’s keep him in the pocket,” Golding said to Kirk Herbstreit on ESPN’s College GameDay show.

Ole Miss and LSU enter Saturday’s game both undefeated on the season. Leavitt had a monster game earlier this season for LSU in a win over Clemson. He rushed for two touchdowns, while also adding a touchdown pass.
Golding was previously the Ole Miss defensive coordinator, before becoming head coach. He and his coaches have worked closely to come up with a plan to stop Leavitt.
“We’ve had to be unique with some things this week, to be able to cage him, keep him in the pocket, make him become a pocket passer,” Golding said of his team’s work to prepare for Leavitt.
Saturday night is a homecoming for LSU head coach Lane Kiffin. Kiffin left Ole Miss during the 2025 season, when the Rebels were about to head to the College Football Playoff. Ole Miss fans have voiced their displeasure with Kiffin on Saturday.
Golding knows how important this game is for both programs.
“I think both teams, both schools put themselves in great position to have a top ten matchup, to open up SEC conference play for us at home with College GameDay. So there’s so much on the line just from what the game means as far as from conference play and being a top ten matchup,” Golding said, per USA Today.
The Rebels and Tigers play Saturday night at 7:30 ET.
