For nearly two decades, Steve Jervis has committed himself to providing his football players with opportunities for success, both on and off the field.

His passion for the sport has produced a championship program, and his love for the athletes has endeared him to a welcoming community.

At halftime of the 92nd Dream Game on July 22 at John Henzes/Veterans Memorial Stadium, the Scranton Lions Club will honor the Lackawanna Trail head coach as its Man of the Year.

“I am beyond grateful,” Jervis said. “Being honored is humbling, given the Dream Game’s long tradition as being one of the longest-running all-star games in the country, and my respect for everyone involved in it and local football.

“I just feel very honored.”

Jervis is a graduate of Tunkhannock High School, where he served as head coach for six years from 2002 to 2007 and compiled a 23-39 record, and Lafayette College. He became the head football coach at Lackawanna Trail in 2009 and has been a science teacher in the district since 2010.

Since his arrival, he rejuvenated a proud and successful program. Jervis has guided the Lions to a record of 136-64 in 17 seasons. Overall, he has 159 career wins to rank 11th all-time among Lackawanna Interscholastic Athletic Association coaches.

During his time at Lackawanna Trail, Jervis earned The Times-Tribune Coach of the Year in 2016 and 2018. The Lions have seven District 2 Class 1A championships, including the last four in a row, and a District 2 Class 2A title. They also have three straight LFC Division III titles.

Lackawanna Trail finished 12-2 in 2025 and won the LFC Division III and District 2 Class 1A championships. The Lions lost to Belmont Charter in the PIAA quarterfinals.

“When I arrived at Lackawanna Trail in 2009, the one thing that jumped out to me was the tradition of championship success from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, right through the 2000s,” Jervis said. “It is generational success. It starts within the community. The longer I have been here, the more I have learned how wonderful it is. It is a place where you want to work hard and pay back the community that supports us so much.”

In addition to his coaching contributions to the sport, Jervis is active at the state level, promoting area athletes. He serves as the District 2 representative and as an officer and president in 2025, which earned him a spot on the executive board of the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association.

This spring, Jervis served as an assistant coach for the Pennsylvania all-star team at the Big 33 Classic at Cumberland Valley High School. In 2012, he was an assistant coach for the PSFCA East-West game.

Jervis coached in the Dream Game twice. He guided the City all-stars in 2022 and the County all-stars in 2011.

Jervis and his wife, Kirsten, have two sons, Stephen, 20, and Tyler, 18, who are both students at Colgate University. Stephen and Tyler were both players at Lackawanna Trail and were part of LFC division and District 2 championship teams. The family resides in Factoryville.

Stephen played in the 2024 Dream Game as a member of the City all-stars. Tyler will be a member of the City all-stars as a linebacker and quarterback.

The County won its sixth straight in the series and leads overall 44-42-4. There was no game in 2020, but rosters were selected to honor the players.
