‘I know nobody wants to hear that’: Jeff Hafley sends a brutal warning to Dolphins fans

This is a time of profound optimism for NFL fans throughout the country as their teams begin another season with a blank slate. Unfortunately, that might not be the case for Dolphins fans.
After a disappointing season under Mike McDaniel last season, the Miami Dolphins hired Jeff Hafley and parted ways with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as they undergo a full reset.
Needless to say, things are going to be different this season. However, that doesn’t mean they’re going to be better.
‘Nobody wants to hear that’
During a recent interview with Stephen A. Smith, Hafley pretty much openly admitted that the team might not win a lot of games this season.
“Success is not gonna be measured in wins and losses this year — and I know nobody wants to hear that,” Hafley said, via Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN. “I want to see where we end and how far we can take this thing, and how much we develop these players … Success for me is gonna be we go on that field and we play so hard that even you turn it on and say, ‘man those guys are flying around.’
“I just think this year’s so much about developing who we are as a football team, finding the right guys and by the end of the year saying, ‘We’ve got something real powerful moving forward.’”
It’s a pretty brutal message if you’re an optimistic Dolphins fan, but it’s probably the truth.
A New Team
The fact is, this season will be a pretty significant rest for the Dolphins. With Tagovailoa off the team and now competing for a starting spot with the Atlanta Falcons, the team is now turning to fifth-year quarterback Malik Willis. While Willis has put up some pretty impressive numbers in limited action, he’s never really been a full-time starting quarterback before.
As for the defensive side of the ball, Hafley is more of a defensive-minded head coach, serving as the defensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes before he became the head coach at Boston College. He then left the college level to become the defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks. Hafley is undoubtedly going to make some changes and install his system and his players on the defensive side of the ball, but that isn’t going to happen overnight.
Needless to say, he’s probably not wrong in warning fans that this season might get a little rough, because the truth is that this team is far from a finished product.
