‘I Think He Is Desperate’ — CFB Analyst Drops Blunt Assessment of Deion Sanders’ Decision To Dismiss Colorado Players After Northwestern Loss

Colorado suffered an embarrassing 41–7 loss at Northwestern. Three days after the defeat, head coach Deion Sanders revealed the core issue that concerned him. Sanders said he saw players laughing and joking after the blowout loss, which sparked strong reactions among fans. The head coach was frustrated by their behavior and confirmed on Tuesday that multiple unnamed players had been kicked off the team.

Joel Klatt Questions Deion Sanders’ Dismissals

During a recent episode of ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd’, Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt discussed whether Sanders’ drastic decision was an attempt to divert attention from the embarrassing loss and said:

“I thought it was interesting. I look at the way the season went a year ago, and I think he is desperate to try to avoid what was kind of a clear collapse in the culture in the locker room of the team. It was a little bit stark. I don’t love it either because, now granted, there’s still a lot of the old-school mentality in me of, like, ‘Oh, hey, this is college football,’ but you are exactly right. There are guys who are making money, and you are obligated to behave a certain way.

“He talked about the term he uses, basically behavior detrimental to the organization and the program. If this is the standard that he wants to set, then he should. The performance was abysmal at Northwestern. They did not play well, and if this is the direction that he wants to go, then that’s the direction he should go.

“My question, though, is: Shouldn’t this be something that’s happening in Year 1 or Year 2 and not—what is this—Year 4? After four years, in my mind, I’m like, ‘Well, haven’t you built the culture that should be superseding what you’re trying to nip in the bud?’ That would be my pushback.”

The head coach also made it clear that his decision was not based solely on one incident. Sanders described the dismissals as a response to a continuing pattern of conduct that was detrimental to the team. He admitted that he had not dealt firmly enough with similar problems last season and did not want them to damage the program again.

There will now be added pressure on Sanders to prove that dismissing the players can create meaningful change instead of bringing further instability to the program. The Buffaloes’ attitude and response in their next game will reveal whether his strong disciplinary action successfully delivered the intended message throughout the locker room.

Colorado will begin its Big 12 schedule against Baylor before facing difficult games against Texas Tech and Utah. The upcoming stretch could significantly affect the direction of its season and increase scrutiny surrounding Sanders’ leadership.

The head coach must now demonstrate that he still has control of the locker room and can transform accountability into better performances on the field.
