Illinois moving quickly on committed in-state recruit in hopes of a big flip

It is officially June, and that means there are plenty of big-time recruits ready to visit the Illinois football program.
As of right now, the Illini haven't done much for the class of 2027, sitting with four commitments and a national recruiting ranking of just inside the top 70. But there are plenty of big fish left out there, and Bret Bielema is trying to flip one in favor of the Orange and Blue.
A month ago, Illinois wasn't in the running for Gavin Ericson-Staton. He was a committed player to Iowa State since mid-April, and the Illini weren't on the radar.
On May 13, Illinois came in with a scholarship offer. Ericson-Staton already had an official visit scheduled to check out Iowa State, but now, this weekend, he will also visit Illinois to see what Champaign is all about.

So, within a matter of three weeks, Illinois offered Ericson-Staton a scholarship, and he already wants to take an official visit. That is definitely a good sign, and this would be a big recruit to flip as well.
Ericson-Staton is a 6-foot-5, 270-pound offensive tackle from Montini Catholic High School in Illinois. He is rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 1028 player in the class of 2027. He is also the No. 64 interior offensive lineman in the country and the No. 39 player in the state of Illinois.
While not being in the top 1000 usually worries me, I also take a look at the scholarship offers. Ericson-Staton has some impressive offers, which include Missouri, Kansas State, Iowa State, and Minnesota, among others.
The Illinois class of 2027 is starting to become about building the offensive line for the future
It is interesting seeing how the Illini class of 2027 is coming together. Bielema is clearly focusing on defense and the front lines.
If Ericson-Staton flips to Illinois, that would give us three out of five commitments for 2027 on the offensive line. That is what I want to see for the future. Build from the inside out.
Illinois could always use more offensive line talent, too. We just had nearly the entire offensive line age out and head to the NFL, so building more depth is what can keep us afloat moving forward.
Hopefully, this weekend goes well, and Illinois can get a flip sometime next week. The coming weeks are so crucial to the program.
