With the Indiana dootball team led by head coach Curt Cignetti, looking to capture a second straight national championship, the program has been locking up huge recruitments. As the Indiana football program has been beating other teams to the punch on prospects, add another to the list in getting the commitment from a four-star linebacker.
Announced on Friday, the Hoosiers got the commitment from linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield, who had other offers from such schools as the University of Georgia and the University of Miami.
“BREAKING: Four-Star LB Jalaythan Mayfield has Committed to Indiana, he tells me for [Rivals],” Fawcett wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “The 6’2 235 LB chose the Hoosiers over Georgia and Miami.”
“In Bloomington, we win. Google it!” Mayfield said to Fawcett.
A look into Indiana football’s newest commitment
Across multiple recruiting experts, Mayfield is a four-star prospect, as he went to high school in North Carolina, and when speaking on his live commitment on CBS Sports, he spoke highly of Cignetti and Indiana football’s development.
“It’s a great place. Coach Cig does a great job with the players,” Mayfield said, according to The Daily Hoosier. “They take 3, 2-star guys, unranked guys, and make them national champions, so that’s the place to be developed. Miami, Georgia, great programs, they develop players as well, but nobody does it like Indiana.”
Adding quite possibly another quality player for the Hoosiers, Rivals’ Charles Power speaks on what makes Mayfield an impressive prospect.
“Thickly-built, instinctive linebacker who is a tackle machine on Friday nights,” Powers wrote. “Measured in at a shade over 6-foot-1 and around 235 pounds. Touts plus length for the position, with arms that measure around 33 inches. Highly productive player who lives in opposing backfields. Intelligent and instinctive. Reads plays and will often beat offensive players to their spot. Uses his length to stack and shed. Motor runs hot and makes second-effort plays. Quality tackler who shows good form. Also shows ability as a pass rusher and blitzer.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen how Mayfield will progress if he sticks with the Hoosiers.
