While the Iowa Hawkeyes prepare for the upcoming campaign, the program managed to find a way to improve the football staff. On Friday, it’s said that the Hawkeyes acquired a former Oregon State Beavers staffer to be the new head of the scouting department.
Todd McShane, who was Director of Player Personnel at Oregon State, will now be the Director of Scouting at Iowa, according to Chris Hummer of 247 Sports and CBS Sports. The Hawkeyes get a new face in the scouting department while head coach Kirk Ferentz focuses on coaching his team.
“Iowa has hired Todd McShane as Director of Scouting, a source tells CBS Sports,” Hummer reported. “McShane was most recently the Director of Player Personnel at Oregon State. He’s also spent time at Northwestern and Nebraska.”

With a new lead for the scouting department, perhaps Iowa can climb the ranks more effectively in the long run. The Hawkeyes are always competitive, as the program has been one of those gritty, tough-to-play teams in college football since Ferentz was named head coach in 1999.
However, the program has yet to make a College Football Playoff appearance, and the last time Iowa won the Big Ten was in 2004. Additionally, the Hawkeyes are 11-11 in bowl games under Ferentz while going 221-149 throughout his career. The stats say the program is competitive, but the team hasn’t brought home much hardware over the years.
But with a new scouting department lead, the success could tilt in the Hawkeyes’ favor in the coming years. This season, Iowa aims to remain competitive once again. The team is currently ranked No. 22 in the preseason coaches poll. The Hawkeyes will begin the 2026-27 campaign with a Week 1 home opener against the Northern Illinois Huskies.
