The 2026 college football season will be filled with pressure for Oklahoma Sooners‘ head coach Brent Venables. While the pressure is nothing new to Venables, this version carries a different weight.
Last year, Venables was likely coaching for his job after two losing seasons in his first three years. Venables has quieted those discussions for now, but the narrative he continues to face is whether he belongs among the sport’s elite head coaches.
Venables proved last year he’s still one of the great defensive playcallers, as his defense was ranked among the best in college football. However, his offenses have ranked among the least productive units in college football over the past two seasons. He’s also 0-3 in bowl games and 0-1 in the College Football Playoff.
While bowl games aren’t the same as they used to be with players sitting out, that is still not a good thing to be known for. Especially when one of those is a blown 17-point lead at home in a playoff game.
Michael “SEC Mike” Bratton spoke about Venables on “That SEC Podcast.” He said that it’s hard to fully buy into him as a head coach.
“We’ve got to be careful because we’ve bought into the hype before and we’ve been burnt by it,” Bratton said. “… I’m warming up to him as a good coach. I still have questions if he’s an elite coach.”
He’s referring to Venables having a 10-win season in Year 2, and many people jumping on the bandwagon. However, he followed that up with a 6-7-year, which brought all the questions back.
That’s why 2026 carries so much weight for Venables. Another strong season would go a long way toward silencing doubts about his overall standing as a head coach, not just a defensive mind.
But if Oklahoma stagnates or regresses offensively again, the same questions that resurfaced after the 6-7 season will return quickly, and this time, they may be harder to dismiss.
