Jedd Fisch Urges Fans to Create "Party" Environment for Big Ten Opener

Within the college football realm, it's well known that "The Greatest Setting in College Football" lies in northeast Seattle on the shores of Lake Washington. Husky Stadium is one of the most iconic venues in all of sports, resting on the waterfront with Mount Rainier looming in the background. While there's no beating the landscape surrounding the shores of Montlake, Jedd Fisch is challenging its fan base to make it the greatest environment in college football.
With Big Ten play officially underway, the third-year head coach took to the microphone during his weekly Husky Football Coaches Show to encourage the UW fanbase to show up and show out for Washington's first conference contest against Minnesota. In both Weeks Two and Three, there were a noticeable number of empty seats throughout the stadium, which isn't necessarily abnormal given the midday start times and level of competition faced throughout the majority of non-conference play.
As Washington is set to take on the Golden Gophers on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. PT, Fisch posed a challenge to Husky fans for this weekend's "Blackout" game.
"We're going to embrace that type of feel," Fisch said in regards to creating a rowdy environment. "We're in the Big Ten, so we've got to play at Ohio State, and at Michigan, at Penn State, their whiteout, those atmospheres, Indiana, and Nebraska on Halloween. So we know we have the greatest setting in college football; now what we've got to do is we've got to make that setting, that stadium, feel like it's a party. It's got to rock; it's gotta have unreal music, an unreal sound system, an unreal jumbotron, and we just have to get it going, and it's going to start with the fans."
Since taking the job in 2024, Fisch has gone 2-0 in blackout games, defeating UCLA in 2024 and Rutgers in 2025. Despite defeating the Scarlet Knights in a dominant 38-19 win last October, Husky Stadium was not at full capacity, mainly in part to the Seattle Mariners hosting a historic 15-inning victory in Game 5 of the ALDS just down the street.
This time around, the Huskies' head coach doesn't want to hear the excuses as Washington opens up a loaded slate of Big Ten opponents, starting with a program that Fisch spent time with in 2009. Despite a rocky showing on the field through the first three weeks, Washington still has everything it wants right in front of it entering the heart and soul of their schedule: showing signs of improvement, an undefeated record, and the opportunity to pick up major wins in conference play.
As the third-year head coach and his team aim to add another blackout-themed win to their resume, they turn to a fan base that is responsible for one of the loudest decibel levels ever recorded in the history of the sport. So, while fans are eager to get back to the place they were just a few years ago, showing up on Saturday night is a good place to start.
