Jeremiah Smith showed why he is the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy in a big road win over Iowa.

Jeremiah Smith makes everything he does on the football field look easy.

Smith, the Ohio State sensational wide receiver, was far and away the best player on the field Saturday in Iowa City. Behind Smith’s record-breaking day, the Buckeyes bested Iowa in one of the marquee games of the week, 31-14.

The highlight of the day was when Smith broke free across a sold-out Kinnick Stadium, scoring on a 57-yard touchdown in the third quarter. The junior finished with 11 receptions for 206 yards and two touchdowns, averaging almost 19 yards per reception.

Already the school record holder in one key receiving category, Smith became No. 1 in receptions and career touchdowns. He passed Emeka Egbuka for receptions with 207, and Chris Olave with his 36th touchdown catch. Both Egbuka and Olave are current stars in the NFL.

Smith also moved into a tie with another NFL wide receiver, Marvin Harrison, Jr., for most 100-yard receiving games.

Ohio State Wide Receiver Receives High Praise From Opposing Head Coach

Kirk Ferentz, the Iowa head football coach who has watched the best of the best in the Big Ten Conference for years, had high praise for Smith.

“All you can do is do your best and try to be as smart as you can playing him, but he’s a great player,” Ferentz said (thanks to ESPN for the quotes). “With a little bit of luck, we won’t see him again during my career, so that’d be OK.”

Smith will have some primetime opportunities to impress Heisman voters in the coming weeks. After hosting Maryland, Ohio State heads to defending national champion Indiana on October 17. They close out the month at USC before opening November with Oregon at home.
