Collin Klein has to be smiling after the way his first three games have gone since becoming the coach of the Kansas State Wildcats.
On Saturday, the Wildcats picked up a 31-20 victory against the Tulane Green Wave at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. K-State improved to 3-0 while Tulane, a College Football Playoff participant a year ago, fell to 1-2.
Quarterback Avery Johnson led the Wildcats with his legs and feet. He threw for 228 yards while also running for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
His last score, a 12-yard run, put the game away early in the fourth quarter.
Tulane became the first team to score an offensive touchdown against the Wildcats when quarterback Kadin Semonza had a nine-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to make it 7-0. K-State responded with 17 unanswered points, including touchdown runs by running back Jay Harris and Johnson.
Just when it appeared they were about to take control, the Wildcats allowed another score just before halftime when Green Wave kicker Cooper Helmke made a 58-yard field goal.
The Wildcats completed an undefeated non-conference schedule, opening with convincing wins against the Nicholls Cowboys and Washington State Cougars. They begin Big 12 conference play next week on the road against the Cincinnati Bearcats. The Wildcats were projected to finish No. 8 in the league by the Big 12 media but are starting to change the minds of a lot of prognosticators.
Many believe they have a favorable schedule that could put them in contention to make the league title game or perhaps even the College Football Playoff.
It would create the best-case scenario for Klein, who is a head coach for the first time in his career. After spending the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Texas A & M Aggies, it seems he was the perfect fit to replace Chris Klieman. He resigned following last season after a disappointing 6-6 finish.
