Kirk Herbstreit's Outfit At Michigan's Spring Game Sparks Reaction

Kirk Herbstreit and his wife, Alison, were in attendance at the University of Michigan's spring football game on Saturday.

The Herbstreits' youngest son, Chase, is a quarterback for the Wolverines. Chase Herbstreit, a former three-star quarterback recruit, committed to Michigan over some smaller schools. Ohio State – Kirk's alma mater – did not make a strong push to sign him.

“Ohio State did not really pursue him to the point of offering a scholarship,” Herbstreit said during an appearance on Barstool Sports’ podcast “Pardon My Take.”

Both Kirk Herbstreit and his dad – along with two of his other boys – played football at Ohio State. Chase Herbstreit grew up a die-hard Buckeyes fan. But he chose to play for Ohio State's arch rival.

Kirk Herbstreit and his wife both rocked University of Michigan colors at the spring game on Saturday, held at Michigan Stadium. However, Kirk Herbstreit carefully chose to just wear Michigan colors. He was not seen in any Michigan Wolverines gear.

"Love that Kirk Herbstreit just wore plain navy blue clothes to watch his son Chase in the Michigan Spring Game. Blend in with the fans but the Ohio State alum wasn't about to get caught in TTUN gear," College Sports Only shared on X.

Herbstreit appeared to go in the same direction as he did last year.

The ESPN announcer's outfit decision was the same last year

Last year, during Michigan's spring game, Herbstreit was seen in Michigan colors. However, he once again did not rock any University of Michigan-specific gear, at least not in general view.

Still, he rocked the colors proudly.

The ESPN college football announcer always sparks a lot of reactions with his outfits at his son's games.

"People hating when he's just supporting his son smh," one fan wrote.

"Weird. Even Buckeyes know where to go to get their kid an elite education," another fan joked.

"He is being what a Dad should be – supportive. Considering he played on that field as a rival and worked as a broadcaster, I am sure lots of memories come up in the Big House," one fan added.

Herbstreit has admitted that most of Ohio State's fan base has been great about his son playing for Michigan. The other 20 percent, though…not so much.

“I know that 80 percent of [Ohio State] people are thrilled and 20 percent are (expletives),” he said last year. “I just decided, it’s one thing to take shots at me, but if you take a shot at me, and you want to get into a fight, it’s not hard for me to do that. So I just try to ignore that stuff the best I can and stay focused on the positive.”

Ohio State, which topped Michigan last season, will enter the 2026 season with a top-five ranking. The Wolverines, meanwhile, will look to make strides in Year 1 of the Kyle Whittingham era in Ann Arbor.
