With the Texas Tech football program getting ready for the 2026 football season, there is no denying that many people are questioning who will play quarterback for the team after a busy offseason. As the drama with the Texas Tech football team and Brendan Sorsby is in the rearview mirror, there is a quarterback on the roster that Kirk Herbstreit believes is in for a huge year.
The analyst would take to X, formerly Twitter, to talk about the top five most underrated quarterbacks in college football heading into the 2026 season, with his No. 1 pick being Red Raiders signal-caller Will Hammond.
Herbstreit believes people are sorely mistaken if there is any talk of the program not being a threat this season after the Sorsby, citing Hammond as an “awesome player.”

“I think Will Hammond is an awesome player,” Herbstreit said. “We got a taste of him last year, a guy that’s six-two, about 210 pounds, coming off the ACL. About at a 10-month mark right now. Hurt it at the end of October last year.”

Kirk Herbstreit continues on Texas Tech football’s Will Hammond
As Herbstreit mentioned, the Texas Tech football star in Hammond, is coming off a torn ACL last October, though it is said he should be ready to go for the opener. Having been with the Red Raiders since 2024, Hammond is ready to shine after only playing eight games last season, throwing for 680 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions, to go along with 299 yards and five scores on the ground.
Herbstreit would say that with his talent and the “uber-talented” roster of Texas Tech, he’s in for a “big year.”
“If he’s healthy, and word is he’s ahead of schedule. Look out for him to have a big year, and potentially I think Texas Tech’s going to be a playoff team this year. But Will Hammond has a chance to have a big year. Keep an eye on him as well,” Herbstreit said.
It remains to be seen if Hammond plays well this season as Week 1 for the Red Raiders comes on Sept. 5 against Abilene Christian.
