The past few weeks have been a whirlwind for Kyle Whittingham, who served as the head coach of the Utah Utes for 22 years, finishing with a record of 177-88.
After completing his 22nd season with a record of 10-2, he announced that he would be stepping down, stating that he did not want to overstay his welcome. During this time, Michigan fired former head coach Sherrone Moore due to allegations of inappropriate conduct. Eventually, Whittingham was named the new head coach at Michigan.
Evaluating your roster is an important step, as it involves determining which players should remain and which ones should be let go. Additionally, it means targeting players in the transfer portal. Over the weekend, Michigan added several new players to its wide receiver room, including Jaime Ffrench from Texas and JJ Buchanan from Utah. The Wolverines have more moves planned as well.
Michigan is poised to secure a transfer wide receiver, according to On3. Pete Nakos and Steve Wiltfong have reported predictions favoring Whittingham’s program to receive a commitment from Salesi Moa, a highly regarded recruit from Utah. Moa, a top-ranked player in the latest recruiting cycle, is expected to play as a wide receiver for the Wolverines.
If Michigan lands Moa, it would further solidify Whittingham’s immediate emphasis on upgrading the wide receiver room, a unit that struggled with consistency and explosiveness last season.
There is also a clear pattern emerging. Whittingham has leaned heavily into familiar recruiting territory early in his tenure, prioritizing players he either coached directly or evaluated extensively during his time at Utah. That approach minimizes projection risk and accelerates buy-in, which is critical for a program looking to stabilize quickly after a turbulent coaching transition.
Looking ahead, Michigan is expected to remain active in the portal as spring practices approach, particularly at quarterback and along the offensive line. With Whittingham setting the tone early, the Wolverines appear intent on reshaping their roster sooner rather than later, and Moa could be another key piece in that foundation.
