Lane Kiffin fires back at Todd Monken over phone call claims

Lane Kiffin has continued to ruffle feathers in the college football world months after leaving Ole Miss for LSU, and his antics have made their way to the NFL.

Cleveland Browns coach Todd Monken claimed Kiffin called him — though he didn't answer — presumably to discuss undrafted tight end Dae'Quan Wright. The Browns waived the former Ole Miss player on Monday, and if he clears waivers, he could become the first player to return to college, as he reportedly has an agreement in place to join Kiffin at LSU.

Kiffin, however, is casting doubt on Monken's version of the story. He claims he doesn't know Monken and never called him, though he stopped short of accusing Monken of lying and posited that someone could have called him using Kiffin's identity.

"There's some inaccuracies in that story, but I don't know," Kiffin said. "Maybe someone else called him that said they were me. I actually don't know Todd… I don't know him or have his number."

In addition to Wright, LSU also landed a commitment from former Ole Miss defensive tackle Zxavian Harris, whom the New Orleans Saints waived earlier this month, on Monday.

Both players could face some hurdles before they're cleared to suit up for LSU, as SEC bylaws prevent players from transferring within the conference outside of the primary transfer portal window in January. Though commissioner Greg Sankey has urged league members to respect the conference's eligibility rules, neither he nor the league has commented directly on either situation, as Wright has yet to clear waivers.

ESPN's Pete Thamel pointed out that the players' legal teams could argue that they were leaving their respective NFL squads, rather than Ole Miss, to join the Tigers.
