Lane Kiffin’s exit from the Ole Miss Rebels was an ugly one. After nearly a full season of the veteran head coach denying rumors speculating that he was going to leave, Kiffin eventually accepted a job with the LSU Tigers. He then left right before the College Football Playoff, leaving the Rebels high and dry amid a potential championship run.
With the 2026-27 season on the horizon, it sounds like Kiffin regrets how everything played out with Ole Miss, according to Mark Schlabach of ESPN. The 51-year-old admitted he wishes he had left when Ole Miss Athletic Director Keith Carter told him to, rather than drag out the whole process. However, Kiffin added an optimistic twist to his regret, claiming he thinks it’s a good thing he regrets how he left the Rebels.
“Yeah, I do,” Kiffin said when asked if he regrets how he departed from Ole Miss. “But I think that’s a good thing that I look at life that way now, instead of saying, ‘No, I don’t. I was right.’ I look at things always now, like, how could I have done them better? But it’s also easier when you’re further removed. There’s no emotion involved.

“I wish I would have gone in when I met with Keith and said, ‘I’ve made the decision to go.’ I wish I would have just said, ‘Hey, I’d like to coach the team,’ and he’d say, ‘No.’ And I’d say, ‘Hey, OK, I appreciate it.’ [I wish I’d] move on [and] never even discussed it again,” Kiffin finished.
Ole Miss participated in the playoffs last season with Pete Golding stepping in as the new head coach. Golding will lead the way in the 2026-27 campaign, and if everything goes well, he will likely retain that role for multiple seasons.
As for Kiffin, he is set to begin his first season as head coach of the LSU Tigers. He took over the gig after the program fired Brian Kelly mid-season last year.
