Lane Kiffin appeared on College GameDay in Week 1 and revealed that he had been in contact with ESPN’s Pat McAfee in the days leading up to LSU’s season opener against Clemson. McAfee thanked Kiffin for everything he had done because he hosts a daily sports show. Then he asked what the week had been like with the SEC suing him just a few days ago.
Kiffin thanked McAfee for their friendship and disclosed the advice that McAfee apparently gave him during what was a very controversial week where he considered putting two former NFL players on the LSU roster.

“That’s why I’ve really appreciated our friendship,” said Kiffin. “And this week, your guidance with me about, you know, ’cause between you and I we’re just about the two most hated people there are. You told me, ‘hey just focus on it. Don’t worry about the noise. A lot of times to do great things you’re going to have to be hated.'”
Spoken like a truly polarizing figure. Although it doesn’t kind of contradict everything that was said on GameDay earlier in the broadcast when Nick Saban, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and McAfee all called for Congress to pass the Protect College Sports Act.

Kiffin said his decision to not play Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris this week wasn’t easy. But in the end he did it with the long term interests of LSU in mind. There are two open roster spots open for those players should the courts hand down a ruling in LSU’s favor.
In the meantime they’ll play Clemson tonight on ABC. We’ll see how everyone feels about Kiffin and McAfee next week on ESPN.
