‘Losing Is Not Funny’ — Former Heisman Winner Backs Deion Sanders’ Decision To Kick Colorado Players off the Team Post Northwestern Loss

The Colorado Buffaloes suffered a disappointing 41–7 loss to Northwestern. Head coach Deion Sanders responded by holding his players accountable and announcing roster changes during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

He said several players had been removed from the program for “conduct detrimental to the team.” Sanders was upset after seeing some players laughing and joking following the 34-point loss.

RGIII Defends Deion Sanders After Colorado’s Cuts

During Tuesday’s press conference, Sanders revealed that multiple players were no longer part of the team, although he did not identify them. Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III believes Sanders was completely justified and said:

“Understand how to win, how to learn after a loss and for it to actually mean something to you. Deion is coaching for his legacy and for the betterment of his players, so they can be great players and great men as they move forward. So, when he loses, he doesn’t look at that as a laughing matter. It’s not funny.

“We’ve all been there. Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there in a moment in organized sports when we lose the game and there’s some joker in the back laughing, and you’re like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa. What is so funny? Why are you in a good mood?’ ‘Oh, you know, my homeboy’s on the other team, and we were just reminiscing about back in the day when we played.’ That ain’t got nothing to do with us getting boat-raced 41–7. Definitely not.

“So, I’m with Deion on this one. You don’t have to put your foot on it and stomp it out. You’ve got to put your foot in it and kick those guys out. Some of those guys, you might have to kick out of the program because clearly it doesn’t mean anything to them. And if it doesn’t mean anything to them, then why are they there?”

”Losing is not funny.” RG111 concluded in his caption.

Sanders later explained that the decision was not based on a single incident. He said the behavior represented conduct that could hurt the entire program and suggested that some players were putting themselves ahead of the team.

Colorado entered the Northwestern game with a 2–0 record, but the blowout defeat exposed concerns about both performance and discipline. Griffin’s support emphasizes the importance of commitment inside a competitive locker room.

Players may remain friendly with opponents, but he believes they must also understand how their reactions affect coaches and teammates after a painful loss. Sanders is now trying to prevent the same cultural problems that he believes damaged Colorado last season. His response clearly warns Buffaloes players to take losing seriously.
