LSU Football: Will Lane Kiffin Lead the Tigers to the Playoff in 2026?
NCAAF College Football News, Photos, Stats, Scores, Schedule & Videos...
With Lane Kiffin’s arrival in Baton Rouge, LSU is arguably the most intriguing college football team for 2026. And make no mistake: Expectations are incredibly high for Kiffin’s debut. The honeymoon period for Kiffin will be short, as the Tigers expect to compete for playoff appearances and the national title right away. LSU last made the playoff and ran the table in ‘19 and the fanbase has been starving to get back to the top of the SEC and the 12-team field.
Kiffin quickly reshaped the roster by adding several pieces from the transfer portal, including quarterback Sam Leavitt (Arizona State), offensive tackle Jordan Seaton (Colorado), defensive lineman Princewill Umanmielen (Ole Miss) and safety Ty Benefield (Boise State). The incoming haul of transfers bolstered a roster already featuring one of the SEC’s top defenses behind cornerback DJ Pickett and linebacker Whit Weeks. Kiffin and coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. consistently produced some of the SEC’s top offenses at Ole Miss and should immediately jumpstart a sluggish attack in Baton Rouge.
Kiffin is one of the SEC’s top coaches and has all the resources to build a high-level winner. But can he lead LSU to a playoff appearance in ‘26? Athlon Sports debates:
LSU Football: Will Lane Kiffin Lead the Tigers to the Playoff in 2026?

Yes, I think Lane Kiffin guides LSU to a playoff appearance in 2026. Given the massive roster overhaul, large class of incoming transfers, and the extensive changes to the scheme and staff, I certainly have concerns about how quickly these new pieces will come together in Baton Rouge. Expecting Kiffin to have this program firing on all cylinders right away is probably unrealistic. However, I think the Bayou Bengals should improve as the season progresses to get to 9-3 or 10-2 and claim one of the last at-large spots in the playoff.
With matchups against Clemson and Texas A&M, along with the anticipated road showdown at Ole Miss, Kiffin may have to lean on his defense early on until a revamped offense finds its rhythm. Arizona State transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt should be a good fit for Kiffin’s offense, but he’s also recovering from a foot injury alongside a rebuilt line and receiving corps.
In addition to Kiffin’s arrival and the expectation of a much-improved offense, LSU’s schedule also sets up for a run at the 12-team field. The Tigers won’t play Georgia or Oklahoma and key games against Texas A&M and Alabama take place in Baton Rouge. Also, Kiffin’s team catches four opponents—Kentucky, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Auburn—projected near the bottom of the SEC standings, providing a nice runway for the Tigers to rack up conference wins and push for a spot in the playoff.

I have my doubts that Kiffin will immediately vault the Tigers back into the playoff field. He’s preached patience and emphasized that LSU has a lot of work to do this offseason in the face of unmatched pressure. Given the lengths the Tigers went to land their preferred coach — and the bridges Kiffin burned on his way out of Ole Miss — it’s understandable why the expectations are what they are. Win the SEC. Return to the College Football Playoff. Win the whole thing, again.
LSU has a roster talented enough to realize those lofty goals, and Kiffin did have the Rebels on the brink of a playoff berth before he walked out the door. But consider the schedule the Tigers are saddled with in 2026. Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Alabama all made the CFP last season. Texas and Tennessee expect to do the same. And Clemson, Kentucky and Mississippi State all project to be more competitive.
Two of LSU’s toughest games (Ole Miss, Texas A&M) are in the first month of the season, which could pose a challenge to a team with so much turnover. I envision a 9-3 finish with the Tigers left on the outside looking in with one too many losses against a tough schedule, a la 2025 Texas.
