LSU officially gives up the fight against SEC

The biggest storyline in college football over the past several weeks has been the ongoing attempts by LSU and head coach Lane Kiffin to add multiple players to its roster who had signed professional contracts and spent time on NFL rosters. Now, it looks like LSU has officially given up that fight.

With the SEC strongly pushing back against LSU’s attempts to roster the former professional players and even considering expelling the program from the conference altogether, it sounds like LSU has decided to wave the white flag.

LSU Looked to Add Former Pro Players

Heading into the 2026 season, LSU and Kiffin had been moving forward with plans to bring in at least three players who signed professional contracts this summer, including former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris.

Adding those players to the roster would break two separate league rules, as the SEC prohibits players from entering the conference after signing a professional contract while also restricting intraconference transfers outside of the designated transfer portal window.

However, a Baton Rouge judge has issued an order preventing both the NCAA and SEC from enforcing their restrictions related to eligibility, the transfer portal, and professional players returning to college football.

On Thursday last week, Judge William Jorden, out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, ruled in favor of LSU by approving a preliminary injunction “that prohibits the NCAA and SEC from punishing any school” that fields former professional players. That would have paved the way for the players to potentially play in Saturday’s game against Clemson.

Ultimately, LSU decided against rostering the players to the roster for Saturday night’s game against Clemson. However, the team only rostered 103 players for the game, allowing two open spots to potentially add Wright and Harris to the roster later in the season.

LSU Gives Up the Fight

With a meeting on Thursday regarding the potential expulsion of LSU from the SEC, LSU President Wade Rousse has sent a letter to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey essentially waving the white flag.

“Allow this letter to clear up the allegations against LSU,” the letter reads, via Amanda Christovich of Front Office Sports. “On the afternoon of September 4, 2026, I called and provided you with advance notice that LSU would not place Dae’Quan Wright or Zxavian Harris on the football roster. This was confirmed when LSU submitted its roster later that evening. On September 8, 2026, LSU filled its two remaining roster spots with eligible student-athletes. The roster is now locked for the season. LSU complied with SEC rules. This issue is moot.

“Also on September 8, 2026, I received notice of the special President’s and Chancellor’s meeting scheduled for tomorrow, September 10, 2026. At no point has LSU ever threatened to upset the meeting. But to be clear, LSU will not challenge, disrupt or seek to cancel or postpone this meeting. This issue is also moot.”

Clearly, LSU no longer intends to carry on this fight.
