College Football Playoff Could Be Headed for 24 Teams

The College Football Playoff could be about to get even bigger.

CFP officials have taken their biggest step yet toward potentially expanding the playoff from 12 teams to 24, opening a 30-day exclusive negotiating window with ESPN to discuss what a larger postseason could look like.

While the move does not guarantee that the playoff will expand, it is a major indication that the idea is being seriously considered.

24 Teams Could Be Coming

The current 12-team playoff has only been in place for a short time, but college football’s changing landscape has already created pressure for another expansion.

The Big Ten is reportedly pushing strongly for a 24-team field. One proposal would include one guaranteed spot for the Group of Six conferences while the remaining spots would go to the highest-ranked teams, eliminating automatic qualifiers and potentially conference championship games.

The SEC has been more interested in a 16-team playoff but could be willing to support 24 teams if certain financial and scheduling demands are met.

That makes the next few months extremely important.

Could It Start in 2027?

The biggest question is when fans could actually see a 24-team playoff.

If the Big Ten and SEC agree to a new format by the Dec. 1 deadline, expansion could potentially begin with the 2027 season. Those two conferences have significant influence over the future structure of the CFP and would need to approve the change.

A 24-team playoff would obviously create significantly more postseason games and potentially generate enormous additional television revenue.

But it could also mean the end of conference championship games in their current form.

College Football Is Changing Again

The possibility of another playoff expansion shows just how quickly college football continues to evolve.

The sport went from a four-team playoff to 12 teams, and now 24 teams could be on the horizon.

For fans, the biggest benefit would be simple: more teams would have a legitimate opportunity to compete for a national championship.

The downside is that the regular season could potentially lose some of its importance, especially if nearly one-fifth of the FBS makes the playoff.

For now, nothing is official.

But with ESPN negotiations underway, the idea of a 24-team College Football Playoff is no longer just a rumor it is becoming a very real possibility.
