After spending much of the past nine months becoming college football's biggest villain, Lane Kiffin will have the chance to provide the first bit of evidence that he's capable of doing what LSU hired him to do when it plucked him from Mississippi — produce national-championship-caliber teams.
Following months of anticipation, and seemingly countless court rulings and temporary restraining orders, Kiffin will begin his LSU tenure when his No. 13 Tigers host No. 23 Clemson on Saturday, Sept. 5 at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in arguably the most hyped game of Week 1 of the 2026 college football season.
The game is a rematch of LSU's 17-10 road victory over Clemson last season. The Week 1 triumph wasn't a portender of future success for the Tigers, who went just 7-6 and fired coach Brian Kelly before the calendar even turned to November. With a coaching vacancy, the university turned to Kiffin, who went 55-19 in six seasons at Ole Miss before being lured away by a seven-year, $91 million contract.
His first test will come against a Clemson program that is no longer the year-to-year national championship contender it had been for a solid decade under coach Dabo Swinney. Over the past three seasons, the Tigers have gone 26-14 and only once made the College Football Playoff. Last season, they went just 7-6, their fewest wins in a season since 2010.
