After constant thrashings of the Maryland football team, there appears to be an expectation from the football world that head coach Mike Locksley will be fired. As rumors surround the Maryland football program and Locksley’s job security, the school has made a change, but it’s not with the head coach.
In the aftermath of the Terrapins’ 37-30 loss to Rutgers, the university has fired defensive coordinator Ted Monachino, according to John Talty at CBS Sports.
“Maryland has let go DC Ted Monachino after Saturday’s 37-30 loss to Rutgers, sources told [CBS Sports],” Talty wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Co-defensive coordinator Aazaar Abdul-Rahim will take over defensive play-calling responsibilities.”

There were some who speculated that the team would make the move to fire Locksley after the Rutgers loss, since the Terrapins are on a bye week. However, college football insider Pete Nakos at On3 Sports said that it’s “unlikely a move is made.”
“While pressure continues to build around the Maryland football program for a decision on Mike Locksley, sources tell On3 it appears unlikely a move is made on Sunday leading into the Terrapins bye week,” Nakos wrote.
Who could the Maryland football team replace Mike Locksley with?
Locksley has been the head coach with the Maryland football team since 2019, amassing a 39-54 record, 17-52 in confefence play, leading many to believe that a split is inevitable. For a potential replacement, Pat Forde at Sports Illustrated would recommend the Terrapins look at one of the coordinators for the highly successful Indiana Hoosiers.
“Maryland should probably try to pry one of the coordinators off Indiana’s staff,” Forde wrote on Sept. 27. “Both OC Mike Shanahan and DC Bryant Haines were on Cignetti’s staff from 2019 to ’23 at James Madison, where they dramatically outrecruited everyone in the DMV area when it came to identifying underrated prospects. When trying to lift up a losing program in the Big Ten, Cignetti stands as the beacon of hope and imitation.”
It remains to be seen when the Maryland football team (2-5) ultimately fires Locksley, but in the meantime, the focus will be on preparing for the next game on Oct. 31 against Illinois.
