Miami (FL) football poured lots of NIL money into the pocket of Darian Mensah this offseason. The Duke transfer follows Carson Beck and Cam Ward as quarterbacks arriving via the College Football Transfer Portal. Yet one analyst believes Mensah is already an upgrade over both.
CBS Sports analyst Danny Kanell raved about Mensah’s potential Wednesday. Featuring these bold words in his breakdown of the dual-threat passer.
“Darian Mensah was awesome at Tulane. Then was awesome at Duke. Now he’s got the best talent and supporting cast he’s had in his entire career. I think this is an UPGRADE over Cam Ward, over Carson Beck,” Kanell said.

The former Florida State quarterback adds Mensah now has Malachi Toney to throw to this fall. Toney delivered the best true freshman wideout numbers in the nation last season with 109 receptions, 1,211 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. So Mensah gets to throw to a potential Heisman Trophy candidate amid his own hype for the top individual award in CFB.
But Mensah gains a target he knows well too in Coral Gables. His top Blue Devils target Cooper Barkate heads to “The U” also this fall. Barkate heads over fresh off catching 72 passes for 1,106 yards and scoring seven touchdowns.
Mensah also receives backing from head coach Mario Cristobal, who’s delivered both a top 10 portal and recruiting class for 2026. The native of San Luis Obispo, California takes the QB reins for an aspiring contender. Specifically one that’s itching to end a 25-year national title drought. He now earns the chance to bring the national crown back to South Beach.
