MIAMI, Fla. – The 2026 college football season inches closer as each day goes by. Coming off a National Championship appearance, it’s a different atmosphere for the Miami Hurricanes. Instead of wondering whether “The U” is back, the program is on the brink of re-establishment.
Joining the Atlantic Coast Conference hasn’t been as welcoming as originally anticipated in 2004. The Hurricanes have undergone several mediocre seasons, but the on-field production is finally looking up.
Regardless of the shortcomings, history doesn’t go away. Five National Championships have been claimed by “The U,” including an undefeated (12-0) 2001-02 campaign. The team produced 17 NFL first-round picks and is considered among the best in college football history.
What was once a program on the brink of extinction later became iconic to the sport.
According to USA Today, the Hurricanes are ranked the ninth-best college football team. The history has kept “The U” afloat over the last few years, but the turnaround is complete. It started with hiring Mario Cristobal as the new head coach ahead of the 2022 season. Despite the luxurious resources at Oregon, the former Hurricanes offensive tackle couldn’t pass on the opportunity to return home.
Following an inaugural 5-7 season, Cristobal and the staff put together a 2023 recruiting class that would later transform the program. It featured Francis Mauigoa, Reuben Bain Jr., Samson Okunlola, and Mark Fletcher Jr.
The Hurricanes showed steady improvement, but the arrival of Cam Ward is when things took off for the better. Following two seasons at Washington State, the Texas native found a new home in South Florida through the transfer portal.
Ward went on to have a historic and remarkable 2024 season. He completed 305 of 454 passes (67.2 percent) and threw for 4,313 yards, including an ACC-leading 39 touchdowns. Ward was named an All-American and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting. The former Hurricanes orchestrator led the highest-scoring offense in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
However, late losses to Georgia Tech and Syracuse put the team out of College Football Playoff contention. The program still finished with its first 10-game winning season since 2017, but it was still a bittersweet ending.
Ward later became the No. 1 pick of the 2025 NFL Draft. As he left, Carson Beck arrived. Coming off five years at Georgia, the Hurricanes made a massive gamble. Beck suffered a torn UCL injury late in the 2024 season and didn’t throw a football until fall camp.
However, Cristobal and the program believed in the possibilities.
Beck didn’t have the most complete campaign, but did enough to take the Hurricanes over the hump and reach the National Championship game. He would later get drafted in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Beck departs, but Darian Mensah arrives.
The Hurricanes found another transfer portal quarterback with proven production. Mensah is expected to lead the program to ACC dominance and another National Championship chase.
It’s truly a new chapter of football in Coral Gables.
