As the football season is set to kick off this week, the brother of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is set to kick-start his college football journey. Recently, Mekhi Penix transferred to Mississippi Valley State University and looks to make his mark in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, potentially following in the footsteps of Jerry Rice.
Standing at 6’4″ and 220 lbs., Penix looks to be a big-play receiver and showcased his ability at Independence Community College last season. There, he accumulated 17 receptions for 234 yards and two touchdowns in eight games, averaging 13.8 yards per reception. The Swag has a reputation for producing standout NFL talent, and perhaps Penix can follow a similar track to his brother on a team desperately looking for success as it enters its second season under head coach Terrell Buckley.
The Delta Devils had a rough season in 2025, finishing 2-10 overall and 1-7 in conference. While they started the season with a close matchup against Southern University and another close game against Texas Southern, they largely struggled against the conference’s best teams. However, their signature win came against a rebuilding Florida A&M University team. They won 35-31 after the game was postponed from Oct. 4 to Nov. 29. The win to end the season gave the Delta Devils momentum heading into 2026.

Now, with Penix on the roster, the Delta Devils look to make noise in the SWAC East during Buckley’s second season at the helm of the program. Follow in the footsteps of his brother, who achieved immense success in college, including placing in the top four of Heisman Trophy voting in 2023, as well as leading Washington to the national championship game against Michigan.
