BATON ROUGE — Following the end of the 2025 season last month in Houston at the Texas Bowl, one of the bigger questions regarding LSU football’s current roster was would quarterback Michael Van Buren stay or go?
Tiger fans now know the answer to that question. Van Buren is planning to enter his name into the transfer portal, On3 reported Saturday.
When LSU needed someone to step up at quarterback after senior Garrett Nussmeier went down with an injury, Van Buren took over the Tigers’ offense and started the final four games including the bowl game. He was Nussmeier’s primary backup at the beginning of the season.
He passed for 1,010 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions while leading the Tigers to a 2-2 record.
Why did Michael Van Buren enter the transfer portal?
Van Buren told reporters following the Texas Bowl that he and new LSU coach Lane Kiffin have had conversations and that he believed that they were in a good place. During the season, the quarterback said that he believed he had a future in Baton Rouge despite the then looming coaching change.
But Van Buren is not a great fit for Kiffin’s system. And it appears both sides want a fresh start.
Michael Van Buren transfer portal landing spots
If Dante Moore moves on the NFL Draft after this season, Oregon could be a possible destination worth watching for Van Buren. He was once committed to the Ducks before he ultimately signed with Mississippi State out of high school.
Penn State is also in the market for a quarterback and Van Buren had interest in high school. If Van Buren wants to stay in the SEC, Tennessee could be a landing spot for him.
