Michigan DE says Oklahoma QB John Mateer is ‘not getting away’ from him

Michigan’s defense has a tall task on Saturday afternoon — containing dual-threat Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer.

In a 24-13 win over Michigan last season, Mateer threw for 271 yards, rushed for 74 with one passing touchdown and two rushing scores.

For Michigan defensive end Dom Nichols, he hopes his presence will help provide a different result this season. Nichols had 1.5 sacks in Week 1 versus Western Michigan and was a bright spot on the defense.

“It’s kind of my turn to make my impact on the game,” Nichols said on Tuesday. “I just hope I can go in there and change some things about the outcome.”

Nichols was asked about how he’ll approach going up against a dual-threat QB like Mateer — he provided a bold claim.

“I go about it the same way,” Nichols said. “He’s not getting away from me.”

While Nichols is exhibiting confidence about containing Mateer, the likelihood of Mateer getting shut out completely by Nichols and Michigan’s defense seems slim. Nichols could very well net multiple sacks against Mateer, but he’s also one of the most talented running quarterbacks in the nation with a penchant to not only make defenders miss, but also shed tackles and pick up yards after contact. Mateer is shifty and also hard to take down.

Despite Nichols saying Mateer isn’t getting away from him, it appears he has a lot of respect for him.

“He’s a game-changer,” Nichols said. “Just is what it is. He’s good with the football. He’s a smart guy. He’s a fifth-year dude. He’s got experience. He’s a good football player.”
