Michigan Fans 'Hate' Changes To Iconic Stadium For 2026 Season

Michigan Stadium is one of the most iconic venues in college football.

The legendary stadium officially opened in October of 1927. It’s been the home to the Michigan Wolverines football program for nearly 100 years. The stadium has seen some iconic games, players, coaches and moments over the years.

The stadium will have a slightly new look in 2026, though. Ads have been added to the surrounding portion of the field for the 2026 season. The ads are somewhat reserved, though it’s certainly a change.

The ads, from sponsors like Coca-Cola, Gemini and Meijer, are in white lettering on top of padded blue walls.

However, while the ads are fairly understated, Michigan’s football fans have made it clear that they “hate” them.

“Earlier this week, we asked fans if they loved or hated ads going up inside Michigan Stadium. The results are in, and fans aren’t liking the changes,” SB Nation wrote.

“75% of fans hate that there are now advertisements in Michigan Stadium, while 25% love them.”

Change is always hard

Like it or not, more ads are coming to college football. When teams are spending $20 million or more on their rosters, programs are going to do everything they can to make more money – and have more to spend on their rosters.

Teams like Ohio State and Notre Dame have added official jersey sponsors to their uniforms for the first time ever. It’s not surprising that Michigan Stadium is adding in-stadium ads on the field, too.

Of course, it’s understandable that Michigan fans – fans of a program steeped in tradition – would express their frustration with the ads. However, Michigan Stadium certainly isn’t the first stadium to do something like this – and it won’t be the last, either.

Michigan is set to open the 2026 season on Saturday, September 5 against Western Michigan. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. E.T.
