Michigan secured the commitment of its first cornerback in the 2027 recruiting class on Monday afternoon, as four-star Riverside (Ca.) Notre Dame star Darius Johnson announced his commitment to the Wolverines.
Predictions for the Wolverines to land Johnson were made public this past weekend. This is a direct result of the foundation laid by cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford, who had a relationship with Johnson going back to when he was an assistant at BYU. Johnson took a visit to Ann Arbor on March 28 and also met with the staff at his school during the spring contact period.
“Coach Gilford was actually the first coach to offer me when I was a freshman and he was at BYU,” Johnson told Rivals. “He’s a great coach and someone I’m really comfortable with.”
Michigan beat the likes of Cal, UCLA, Oregon, Oklahoma, Arizona State, and others for Johnson, who will take his official visit to Ann Arbor from June 19-21 during Victor’s Weekend.
Following this commitment, Michigan is up to 12 commitments in the 2027 class, with seven of them making their his decision in May.
Along with Johnson, the Wolverines hold commitments from four-star defensive lineman Xavier Muhammad, four-star wide receiver Quentin Burrell, four-star running back Tyson Robinson, four-star edge rusher Jayce Brewer, four-star offensive lineman Jakari Lipsey, four-star edge rusher Recarder Kitchen, four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati, three-star safety Charles Woodson Jr., three-star offensive lineman Sidney Rouleau, three-star offensive lineman Louis Esposito and three-star safety Maxwell Miles.
At 6-foot-1 and 155 pounds, Johnson is the No. 311 overall prospect in the country, No. 36 cornerback and No. 28 player in California, per the Rivals Industry Ranking. This past season, he recorded 28 tackles, 10 pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, two sacks and one interception. Check out some of his junior year highlights below.
