Michigan Football returns to AP Top 25 Poll after stunning Oklahoma

As the dust settles on a thrilling day of college football, there’s a shakeup in the AP Poll — and it’s one that’s put the Michigan football team back where it belongs.
Following a shocking, defensively dominant upset over then-No. 11 Oklahoma, the Wolverines have returned to the Top 25, rising to No. 19. Despite continued inconsistency from quarterback Bryce Underwood, Michigan’s defense put on a clinic to hold quarterback John Mateer and the Sooners’ offense to just 10 points for a 17-10 victory.
Perhaps some Wolverines fans will feel slighted by this ranking, and I’d be inclined to agree. Michigan is undefeated, and one of its two victories came over one of the most formidable teams in the entire SEC. It strikes me as especially disingenuous when Ohio State, who suffered a disastrous loss to Texas last night, get to remain firm in the top 10, likely solely off preseason inertia. But it’s a quirk that speaks to the fundamental issues with early season polls, and it’s likely that voters are still inclined to dock the Wolverines votes after their ugly showing against Western Michigan last week. In any event, the Wolverines will have plenty of opportunities to summit the poll in the coming weeks.
Dethroning the Buckeyes are the Longhorns, who last held the No. 1 spot in October of 2024. Ohio State slides to No. 6, while Oregon craters to No. 21 after a disastrous upset loss to Oklahoma State. USC at No. 12, Penn State at No. 14 and Iowa at No. 18 round out the Big Ten’s representation in the Top 25.
