Tennessee moves up polls after win over Georgia Tech

The Tennessee Volunteers are moving on up in the polls after a strong performance on Saturday night in Atlanta.

The Vols defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 45-24 on the strength of 299 rushing yards, a poised performance from true freshman QB Faizon Brandon in his first road start, and a defense that was fast, physical, and opportunistic with some game-swinging turnovers.

That win was good enough to move up Tennessee in both polls. The Vols jumped from 18 to 15 in the AP Poll, leapfrogging Oregon and Oklahoma, who both lost as road favorites to unranked opponents. Tennessee moved from 18 to 14 in the Coaches Poll.

Perhaps most notably is who is now on top of the polls. Texas moved from 4 to 1 with their 24-23 comeback win over Ohio State in Austin, and that propelled them to the top spot.

Tennessee has Kennesaw State next weekend, and then the Longhorns come to Knoxville. Texas has UT-San Antonio next weekend, so you can book Texas vs. Tennessee as a battle of the unbeatens on Sept. 26 in Knoxville at noon. Think that’s gonna get a bit more attention now?

Facing number one is always a spectacle, and it looks like the Vols will get their shot at toppling the Longhorns from that perch in a couple of weeks.
