Michigan football isn't scheduled to play Texas Tech this year, but the Wolverines' athletic department still found itself in the middle of the latest college football scandal.

Per Yahoo college football reporter Ross Dellenger, Michigan has canceled its Sept. 18 women's volleyball match against Texas Tech, as Dellenger called Michigan "the latest program to prohibit contests against Tech in light of its intention to allow a player to compete after admitting to betting on his own school."

That player in question was quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who on June 8 was granted a temporary injunction by Lubbock judge Ken Curry to maintain his eligibility for Texas Tech in the upcoming season. Sorsby had previously admitted to what he called a gambling addiction dating back to his freshman season at Indiana in 2022, placing more than 9,000 bets over the span of five years, including 40 bets on his own team.

According to Dellenger, Michigan is the third school to consider a boycott on games against Texas Tech, joining Nebraska and Georgia and planning "to hold further discussions with its athletic staff on prohibiting contests against the Red Raiders."

Texas Tech had fought tooth and nail to preserve Sorby's eligibility, but on Monday, June 15, there was a twist. Sorsby announced that he was entering the NFL supplemental draft instead of playing in college, creating speculation that he had run into legal trouble.

And now we know what that legal trouble was.

Again per Dellenger, the Big 12 filed a legal complaint against Texas Tech following Texas attorney general Ken Paxton's demand that the conference refrain from sanctioning the school. Many Big 12 schools have joined in admonishing Texas Tech for its decision to retain Sorsby, including Kansas and Utah and it led to the Big 12's legal complaint that one expert called "devastating."

And even though Michigan is not a part of the conference, it appears to be taking a stand against the Red Raiders – though as of Tuesday morning the game still appeared on the team's official website.
