Mike Elko Reveals Blunt Secret to Keeping Aggies Humble

Texas A&M is off the best season in recent history and the Aggies are hoping to turn that foundation into a fruitful era of the program.

With unprecedented success coming with this latest batch of Aggies, questions around them staying humble and hungry heading into the latest campaign have already started to swirl.

That responsibility falls on the shoulders of third-year head coach Mike Elko, who has ushered in a new culture in College Station and is not looking to change that anytime soon.

After being asked by a reporter at SEC Football Media Days how he is keeping his team focused in on their lofty goals for their latest campaign, Elko had a blunt yet realistic answer for the hard task.

"I show them our trophy case, and it's empty. They're all very aware of that," remarked Elko. "It's not lost on us that we haven't won the hardware that we're searching for."

As Elko stated, the fact that the Aggies had nothing to show for their incredible season is not lost on him nor those suiting up for the squad again this season.

Granted, making the College Football Playoff is no slouch and it is not necessarily Texas A&M's fault that it was not able to play in or potentially win a bowl game with the format of the first round of the tournament.

The Aggies still had everything in front of them, however, dropping both of its key matchups that would have sent them to their first SEC Championship Game and the next round of the CFP at the Cotton Bowl.

It is not just this latest group that has seen its chances at serious hardware elude them, as the program has not added a trophy, outside of bowl games, to its case since 1998. That was its lone title in the Big 12 and the last time the Aggies even competed for a conference crown.

But this latest incarnation of Texas A&M has already shattered expectations and curses that have seemed to loom over the program following its last true taste of glory.

With the leadership of Elko and several key Aggies coming back, such as quarterback Marcel Reed and receiver Mario Craver, Texas A&M knows what it takes to win.

And with a sour taste in their mouth, they know exactly what needs to be done to go even further this time around.

All that remains to be seen is if Elko's sharp motivation plan will actually lead to the fulfillment of these goals, or if the Aggies will be forced to stare a dusty, old trophy case for yet another year.
