Missouri football has added some competition to the interior of its offensive line with an SEC starter.
The Tigers secured a commitment from Mississippi State offensive guard Zach Owens on Monday morning. He is the fifth offensive lineman to commit to Mizzou in this transfer portal window and the 25th player overall.
Owens started games at both right and left guard for Mississippi State last season. He is listed a 6 foot 6, 340 pounds and has appeared in 25 total games over his career.
According to Pro Football Focus, he played 564 total snaps for the Bulldogs last season and allowed 10 total quarterback pressures, including one sack.
Owens, who is from McDonough, Georgia, signed for Clemson out of high school but only played reserve reps for Dabo Swinney’s Tigers, before transferring to Colorado as a redshirt freshman. He appeared in 10 total games for the Buffs, mostly on special teams.
He was a four-star prospect out of high school, ranking as the No. 198-overall player in 247Sports’ composite ratings in the Class of 2023. He is expected to have two remaining years of eligibility.
He is likely to add competition to the Tigers’ competitions at the guard spots. Missouri played Dominick Giudice and Curtis Peagler and left and right guard, respectively, in 2025. Giudice will be a candidate to start at center in 2026.
Mizzou added Owens’ former Mississippi State teammate and offensive lineman Luke Work earlier this offseason. Missouri has also made portal additions along the offensive line with Arizona State left tackle Josh Atkins, Kansas State reserve Will Kemna and Charleston Southern left tackle Colin Sorensen.
Before the portal opened, Missouri’s most-glaring need appeared to be at right tackle, where third-team All-American Keagen Trost is graduating.
But, none of the players Missouri has signed to date have taken the bulk of their reps at that outside position, which has become even more important with a left-handed quarterback in Austin Simmons entering the picture.
The college football transfer portal closed for new entries Friday, Jan. 16. That means Missouri should only be adding players from this point forward, as there is no deadline to sign with a new team but players who previously were not in the portal database can now no longer enter.
