Tim Tebow, a Florida Gators legend, clapped back at ex-NFL quarterback and fellow analyst Chase Daniel. Tebow’s comment came after Daniel compared this year’s Gators to the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Gators Could Be Next Big SEC Surprise
Daniel and Tebow were on the SEC Nation discussing the potential of this Gators team in the 2026 season, and Tebow was not happy with Chase Daniel’s take.
Daniel went on to say, “I do think that Florida could be the next Vandy.” Tebow took that as a dis, which is understandable, given Florida’s history as a program, including three national championships and eight SEC championships.
Daniel later commented on the tweet, saying, “Relaxxxxx….Florida COULD be a surprise team like Vandy was last year. Big game for the Gators.”
Vanderbilt hasn’t been nearly as successful a program as Florida, so it’s easy to see why Tebow may have taken the comparison differently than Daniel intended.

The context for Daniel’s take was that the Gators could surprise people, win a lot of games, and pull off victories they probably weren’t expected to win, similar to what Vanderbilt has done over the last two years.
The Commodores have been college football’s Cinderella story recently, and the Gators have the recipe to do exactly the same. Florida has only had one winning season in the last five years.
That’s a part of the reason they now have a new head coach running the ship in Jon Sumrall. He’s looking to bring back the winning culture and mindset he instilled in both his previous stops – Troy and Tulane.
As for how the two teams compare on paper, Florida has the better offense according to PFN’s CFB Offense Impact Score, with an 87.3 compared to Vanderbilt’s 72. On the defensive side, Vanderbilt has a slight edge according to PFN’s CFB Defense Impact Score, with an 82.2 compared to Florida’s 81.9.
So while Daniel’s comparison may have rubbed Tebow the wrong way, his point seemed to be more about Florida being a potential surprise team than comparing the overall history or success of the two programs.
