Most Interesting Overall Transfer: Jaylen Mbakwe

I suspect that recruits (especially wide receivers/cornerbacks) have been trying to convince college coaches to let them play both ways for years and coaches would not let them. After the success of Travis Hunter at Colorado (and Jackson State) coaches seem to be telling recruits that they will let them try, but then forcing them to one position once they’re in the fold. Jaylen Mbakwe was one of the top recruits in the country when he committed to Alabama in 2024 and wanted to play both ways. He got a decent amount of playtime as a true freshman as a cornerback. An impressive feat at Alabama. Going into his sophomore season though he decided that he really wanted to play wide receiver and switched sides of the ball. He went from being a rotation corner to a bench receiver. After the 2025 season he decided to transfer and came to Georgia Tech despite offers from big time teams (he was still in Athens after a visit there when he committed). And this Georgia Tech team has a lot of questions at both receiver and cornerback.

Mbakwe has immense potential. His athleticism really jumps out at you. He played quarterback in high school, so he doesn’t have a ton of experience at either position, but most scouts believe him to be a better cornerback than wide receiver. There were some rumors that he committed to Georgia Tech because they would let him play both ways (or just play wide receiver), but it seems that he is going to be just playing cornerback. His highlights from two years ago show you why he is so lauded. He can explode out of a cut at a ball carrier or a ball in the air. For a freshman he shows a really good ability to get his eyes around to the quarterback and make a contested play on the ball. I would be shocked if he was not a starting cornerback on the team this year and he has serious potential to be a lockdown corner and a complete game changer for this defense. To get a commitment from Mbakwe was a major coup, especially if they did not make any positional commitments to him.

That being said, I would not be surprised if Brent Key and company worked him into other parts of the team too. Perhaps they build a few specialty offensive packages with him out wide, either as a decoy or to run screens or end arounds. They also could use him as a punt returner. He returned a few for Alabama and he has the speed and ball carrying ability to make a great returner.

Mbakwe is the most interesting transfer because he should both be excellent at his main position (cornerback) for the Jackets, but because he could potentially be used in so many different ways on top of that given his offensive experience and his return abilities.
