After nearly five seasons away from coaching, former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron has agreed to a deal to return to the Tigers under Lane Kiffin’s staff. His role will be the special assistant to recruiting and defense.

Coach O spent five seasons with the Tigers and led them to a National Championship in 2019 with a team made up of Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson, and Ja’Marr Chase. Across all five seasons in Baton Rouge, Orgeron led them to a 51-20 record with a 4-1 record in postseason play.

With the hire, this would allow the former head coach to be on the ground and on the road recruiting with and without Kiffin present. It’s important to note that Orgeron and Kiffin have a close relationship that spans over 10 years.

In fact, they’ve been down a very similar coaching trail with Orgeron, starting his career at Ole Miss, coaching at USC for one season, and finishing his career at LSU. All programs that Kiffin has also been a head coach at.

As far as his recruiting skills go, he’s notched a top-10 recruiting class in all six seasons during his time as head coach, with four of them being top-5 classes.

LSU is set to open its 2026 campaign at home against Clemson on ABC with ESPN College Gameday in attendance for the game as well.
