Nebraska coach Matt Rhule lands otherworldly recruit in ‘Lanterns’ cameo

HBO’s “Lanterns” wrapped up the show’s first season on Sunday night. The finale featured a scene at a high school football game and maybe the most random HBO cameo since Eric Mangini showed up on “The Sopranos.” This time the football coach on set was Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule.
Rhule was shown shown in the stands with one character remarking the school’s whole staff had showed up. After the game was over he walked onto the field and handed a Nebraska hat to quarterback Noah Macon. The quarterback accepted the hat and seemingly made a verbal commitment to the Cornhuskers right then and there.
HBO has not yet renewed Lanterns for a second season. If they do, hopefully Rhule and Nebraska will still be involved. We won’t spoil anything, but based on a big twist in the final, Rhule’s new quarterback might have some eligibility issues, which could make for a fun political subplot.

With the series taking place in Nebraska, Rhule’s cameo seems inevitable in retrospect. In the pilot episode one character used Nebraska football trivia as part of an interrogation. Rhule showing up only deepens the Cornhuskers’ ties to the DC Extended Universe.

What a weekend it was for Rhule. On Saturday Nebraska beat Maryland, 48-23, improving the school’s record to 5-0. They will now take on two ranked conference foes over the next two weeks in Indiana and Oregon.
