The Nebraska Cornhuskers are getting a boost in the backfield, thanks to a running back who is switching sides from one Big Ten program to another. Nebraska football scored another offseason win after reports surfaced on Tuesday that the program landed former Penn State Nittany Lions running back Tikey Hayes via the college football transfer portal, according to Sean Callahan of HuskerOnline.com.
“BREAKING: Nebraska is set to add former Penn State RB Tikey Hayes as a late addition to its 2026 roster. The former four-star recruit spent the spring at Iowa Western CC after leaving PSU in January. He has four years of eligibility remaining,” Callahan shared via a social media post on X (formerly Twitter).
This also gives Hayes an opportunity for a larger role after recording just 18 rushing yards on three carries for the Nittany Lions in the 2025 college football season.

Hayes joins a Nebraska football running back room that currently also features the likes of sophomore Isaiah Mozee, Mokhi Lenson, junior Kwinten Ives and a pair of freshmen in Conor Booth and Jalam Rule.
Hayes adds depth and experience to that group, a season after the Cornhuskers finished just 81st in the national overall with 145.9 rushing yards per contest. In the same season, their ground attack was led by Emmett Johnson, who picked up 1,451 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 251 carries before turning pro and getting selected in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Cornhuskers are scheduled to open their 2026 campaign with a game against the Ohio Bobcats on September 5 at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska.
