New Potential Landing Spot Emerges for Florida Transfer QB DJ Lagway

Manny Diaz and the Duke Blue Devils watched quarterback Darian Mensah walk away on Friday, entering the transfer portal after one season in Durham. They might have their eye on a high-profile successor behind center.

“Sources tell me and @chris_hummer that one of the quarterbacks now of interest to Duke as a potential replacement for Darian Mensah is former Florida star QB DJ Lagway, who has been on the verge of heading to Baylor but hasn’t signed yet,” CBS Sports’ Matt Zentiz wrote Friday night on X.

Mario Cristobal’s Miami Hurricanes, who are playing for a College Football Playoff national title on Monday night, are the leader in the clubhouse to land Mensah, who transferred to Duke from Tulane last offseason. The Hurricanes will have to replace Carson Beck, whose eligibility is up.

Zenitz reported on Thursday that Lagway had settled on joining Dave Aranda’s Bears. Baylor is approximately a two-hour drive from Lagway’s hometown in Texas.

“The deal is expected to get done in the near future, per sources,” Zenitz said on X.

Lagway told On3 last week that rumors that he wasn’t entrenched at Baylor were untrue. A former five-star recruit, he started all 12 games for the Gators in 2025, competing 63.2% of his passes for 2,264 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also threw 14 interceptions.

The Blue Devils now face a dilemma following Mensah’s decision to depart. Henry Belin IV, the Blue Devils’ backup passer in 2025, recently transferred to Missouri State. Duke added Ari Patu, a former Stanford and North Alabama signal-caller, earlier this month.
