Nick Saban spent most of his coaching career convincing players that every detail mattered. His latest College Football Playoff argument had some fans wondering whether one detail mattered a little too much: which conference a team plays in.
The former Alabama coach’s latest “College GameDay” comments revived his long-running argument that strength of schedule should carry more weight when playoff teams are evaluated.
Saban has argued that teams should not be discouraged from scheduling difficult opponents because one loss can damage their résumé, but critics heard another push that could benefit the SEC.
CFB Fans Accuse Nick Saban of Favoring SEC
Saban’s position is hardly new. In 2024, he advocated for anRPI-style model similar to college basketball, arguing that evaluators should weigh who a team played, beat, and lost to instead of treating every record the same.
One fan was blunt,writing, “So preferably a rule or metric that exclusively [expletive] SEC teams?”
Another user saw the same conference angle,writing, “Sounds like he is shrilling to push for more SEC teams in the playoff.”
Another fan wondered whether Saban’s vocal playoff opinions pointed toward something larger,writing, “He must be vying for some sort of role in CFP committee. He’s been the loudest among retired coaches.”

One user reached for one of college football’s favorite SEC punchlines,adding, “Must be another way to help the SEC with those ‘quality losses’ 😂.”
One user delivered perhaps the shortest critique of the group,writing, “Nick has gotten soft 🤦🏻♂️.”
The criticism was not really about whether schedule strength should matter. It centered on whether a system rewarding difficult schedules could give additional benefit to a league that Saban spent nearly two decades dominating and continues to defend as an ESPN analyst.
SEC-Big Ten Debate Adds Fuel to the Argument
The timing made that suspicion easier for fans to voice. Saban had already argued this week that the SEC’s depth exceeds the Big Ten’s, pointing to nine SEC teams in the AP Top 25 and saying the Big Ten had “three good teams at the top and then nothing.”
The Big Ten has a fairly obvious rebuttal: Michigan, Ohio State, and Indiana have won the last three national championships. The SEC has not put a team in any of those three title games, even as Saban has continued to make the case that conference depth should matter when comparing résumés.
There is logic behind his scheduling concern. If playoff selection rewards record above almost everything else, athletic departments have less incentive to schedule another contender in September when an easier opponent offers the same opportunity to add one win.

Fans were not arguing against better games. Their skepticism was about who benefits when losses begin carrying different weights.
Saban wants the sport to find a better measuring stick. His critics already seem convinced that any new one should come with an SEC-bias warning label.
