Nick Saban offers hilarious advice for Lane Kiffin in return to Mississippi

Nick Saban is a man of knowledge.

That applies to offering free advice to Lane Kiffin in Week 3 of the season on how to handle his return to Mississippi as the now-LSU coach, his first trip back to Oxford since he left in a well-documented, awkward and highly contentious manner last November.9

"When you get to that game, give me a call because you're going to break the record for the (expletive)-kicking you get for the place you go back to," Saban said on Thursday on the SEC Network's coverage of SEC Media Days. "Because I have it right now (for) when I went back to LSU after leaving and going to Alabama. I'll give you some coaching points on how to get through that."

Saban, to his point, knows a thing or two about returning to a former stomping ground where his previous fanbase is still emotional about his exit. The then-Alabama coach returned to Baton Rouge in 2008, where he was certainly met with true Southern Hospitality as the top-ranked Crimson Tide came out with the 27-21 win in overtime.

LSU faced Saban's in his first season at Alabama in 2007, with the Tigers taking the win in Tuscaloosa.

Week 3's return to Oxford won't be the first time that Kiffin returns to a former SEC stop of his head coaching career, as he also coached a season at Tennessee. But unlike his return to Rocky Top, which came well after other stops at Southern California, Alabama — where he was an assistant under Saban — and Florida Atlantic, Kiffin's return to Vaught Hemingway Stadium will likely be worse.

Kiffin spent six seasons at Ole Miss, where he transformed the Rebels into one of the SEC's top programs and a consistent Top 25 program. He capped his tenure with a historic 11-1 regular season that put Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff. But he did not coach his team in the postseason due to taking the LSU job.

Is Kiffin thinking of how he will be welcomed back to Oxford? No, he's moved on.

"We have so many competitive games and so much work to do, I don't think about it," Kiffin said. "Now, when it first came out, yeah, I thought about it when they said it's the first SEC game and I'm going back there. But I don't think about it anymore."
