Nick Saban changed college football during his legendary coaching career, but his sudden retirement from Alabama left fans wondering why he walked away. Many believed new Name, Image, and Likeness rules drove the seven-time national champion out.
Saban recently denied those rumors and explained that his age and the demands of recruiting were the main reasons behind his decision. His comments also made one thing clear about his plans to return to coaching.
Nick Saban clarifies retirement motives during national appearance
Saban dismissed the retirement speculation on Tuesday on ESPN’s “Get Up.” Host Mike Greenberg asked whether changes to college football, particularly NIL, could ever bring him back.
“That’s not why I got out of coaching,” Saban said. “We had three years of this, you know, my last three years. I coached in the NFL, so I was used to managing the salary cap and that type of thing.”
Saban then pointed to Alabama’s program stability, noting, “The one thing I didn’t want to do is ride the program down. And once you get a certain age, people start using that against you in recruiting and your ability to attract the kind of players that you want to attract.”
He settled on the real reason behind his exit. “But I think that it was just time for me, 72 years old,” Saban elaborated. “I think it was time to have some quality of life with family with Miss Terry, and enjoy some things we’ve never been able to do.”
His experience managing NFL rosters helped him navigate college football’s roster shifts without issue.
Saban won six national titles at Alabama and a seventh at LSU. Tuesday’s comments marked his most direct rejection yet of the NIL retirement theory.

Rival programs used Saban’s age against Alabama in recruiting for years, questioning whether he would stay another four or five seasons.
Saban framed the decision as more than a career change. “Coaching is not a job, it’s a way of life. So, how about let’s do something else and have some fun doing something else, and not live under this stress level that we’ve lived under for 50 years,” Saban added.
He also pointed to the program’s future, “I wanted the University of Alabama to continue to be successful. I didn’t want my presence to have anything to do with that and their ability to be successful in the future.” Even in retirement, Saban remains an influential presence at Alabama and across college football through his role on College GameDay.
Saban shut down coaching-return talk, telling Pat McAfee’s show, “Forget it” in September. His next chapter arrives on October 8, when ESPN premieres its six-part docuseries on his career.
