US LBM Coaches Poll No. 3 Notre Dame is set to face the Bill Belichick led North Carolina squad this weekend for the first time since 2022.

The Fighting Irish will go up against Tar Heels quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., a sixth-year graduate transfer who previously played for two Big Ten programs in Wisconsin and Maryland.

Edwards is 44-of-78 on completions (56.4%) for 611 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in three games for UNC. His best game so far was in a 35-3 win over East Tennessee State, when he was 15-of-20 for 244 yards and two TDs.

In his college football career, Edwards’ best season was in 2024 with Maryland. Edwards completed 65% of his passes for 2,881 yards, 15 TDs and nine interceptions for the Terrapins that season. On the ground, he compiled 150 yards and five rushing scores.

Edwards will take on Notre Dame for the first time in his career this weekend. The Irish have an all-time record of 21-2 against the Tar Heels, including a 45-32 win over UNC in their previous meeting on Sept. 24, 2022.

Notre Dame (4-0) has one of the top defenses in the country. The Irish have allowed just 8.3 points and 312.3 yards per game. They also average 1.9 takeaways a game.

Opposing QBs are a combined 7-of-25 for 51 yards, two picks and no TDs when under pressure against the Irish.

Notre Dame’s away game against UNC will be on Saturday at noon on ESPN.
