There are no more undefeated teams in the ACC. No. 8 Georgia Tech became the third top-10 team to lose in Week 10 as NC State pulled a 48-36 upset.
The Yellow Jackets led just once for fewer than four minutes as NC State controlled the game. The Wolfpack amassed over 500 yards of offense and averaged over 7 yards a carry as they bossed the Georgia Tech defense up front.
Georgia Tech never cut NC State’s lead to fewer than eight points in the second half after Will Wilson’s TD run midway through the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets are a team predicated on controlling the clock with QB Haynes King’s ability to do nearly everything. It’s not an offense that throws down the field with regularity.
King had four total touchdowns as he again led the Yellow Jackets in rushing and threw for over 300 yards. But Georgia Tech’s defense simply couldn’t do enough to put the offense in advantageous positions.
Georgia Tech became the second undefeated team to lose its first game of the season on Saturday after Navy lost at North Texas and joined No. 9 Vanderbilt and No. 10 Miami with losses in Week 10. Just four undefeated teams remain with four weeks to go in the regular season: Ohio State, Indiana, Texas A&M and BYU.
The ACC is the chaos conference of 2025
Who will win the ACC? There’s no clear answer with four weeks remaining in the regular season.
Virginia leads the conference at 5-0 in ACC play and 8-1 overall. But the Cavaliers are consistently living on the edge. A late pick-6 against Cal on Saturday broke a streak of four consecutive one-possession wins.
Even if you consider Virginia the favorite to win the conference — or at least be the top seed in the championship game — who will face the Cavaliers? It’s now an open question.
It’s a question that also probably doesn’t include Miami and Clemson as answers. The Tigers are definitely out. They dropped to 2-4 in conference play with a loss to Duke on Saturday. And Miami lost in overtime to SMU to fall to 2-2 in conference play.
The Mustangs are one of five teams with one ACC loss through the first 10 weeks of the season. Joining SMU is Georgia Tech, Pitt, Louisville and Duke. All of them have legitimate paths to the conference title game too.
And once you get to the conference title game, you’re a win away from the College Football Playoff. Both SMU and Clemson made it a season ago and it’s pretty clear now that the ACC is going to be a one-bid league. Whoever wins the title game in the first week of December is heading to the playoff. And if you know who that team will be, you should rush to place your bet before the conference becomes even more chaotic.
