The head football coach at Northern Michigan, a Division II program, resigned from his position on Friday, Nov. 7, after reportedly being placed on administrative leave earlier in the week

The move comes after former head coach Shane Richardson was placed on administrative leave just three days ago on Nov. 4, according to WLUC. He was placed on leave alongside assistant coach Joe Gatz, although Gatz was removed from administrative leave on Nov. 7.

"We are committed to achieving standards consistent with our focus on the success of each of our student athletes," said Rick Comley, the Northern Michigan athletic director. "The search for a new head coach will begin immediately."

Northern Michigan said in the announcement that details regarding Richardson's resignation won't be shared due to personal matters.

Offensive coordinator Billy Lundquist will serve as the team's interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Richardson was hired in 2022 and saw virtually no success in his tenure. He went 0-22 in 2023 and 2024 combined and had a 1-8 record in 2025 before resigning. He came to Northern Michigan after serving as head coach at UNC Pembroke from 2014-22.

Northern Michigan is coming off a 70-35 loss to Division II power Ferris State, whose former quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is leading top-10 ranked Ole Miss at the Division I level. Its season continues against Davenport on Nov. 8.
